www.cnn.com/video
www.bbc.co.uk/news/video_and_audio/video/

English learning tips from John

In my younger years (although I still like to think of myself as young!) my first “proper” job was as a private English teacher, translator and interpreter.

I had students visit my home and over that time I acquired a fairly good understanding of the best techniques for learning the language quickly and efficiently. In this post I’d like to share some of this experience, my personal tips!

1.Don’t skip new words

I have noticed a bad habit amongst many English learners. The moment their vocabulary is extensive enough, they start reading English texts, particularly printed books, like English novels. But they move on quickly to the next page or next the chapter without learning new words or writing them down. Often they simply highlight the new words and quickly move on.

Don’t do it. It may be tempting to turn thepage to get to the next chapter, but it will dramatically extend the time required to get to that level where you will seldom need to refer to a dictionary.

It will be discouraging and frustrating at first to stop your reading halfway through a chapter to learn dozens of new words. But if you make an effort to stop reading once you have noted down, say,30 new words or so, and resolve you are NOT going to continue until you have mastered these words, then you will see dramatic improvements in your vocabulary within just a few months.

2. Don’trush, give your mind sufficient time to “digest” new information – repetition is key!

Here is a technique I can very much recommend:

Start writing new words on a single sheet of paper (or if you prefer you can add them to a spreadsheet on your phone or tablet, but I believe in the old fashioned approach!).

Once you fill the sheet with new words (I recommend anything from 15 to 40 words), carry it with you for 3 days. Put the piece of paper in your pocket and carry it with you the whole day.Whenever you have a spare moment, like an office break, a tea break or waiting for a bus, etc., read the whole list once or twice (well, you can even take it to your “l(fā)oo break”)

Make sure that if you read the Chinese definition, you can’t see the English equivalent (maybe write it on reverse of that sheet), and vice versa. Try to do it throughout the day, 5 to 10 times a day should be sufficient—it should not take you long to go through all the words in one go.

Oh, and another thing! Make sure you read your list first time when you wake up in the morning and also make it your last task before you go to sleep in the evening. Research has shown that we are better in committing information to long term memory after we have been exposed to it just before and after sleep!

You will be surprised how well and how quickly you will master the language, if you stick with this method! Don’t be tempted to cut the time from 3 days to 2 or 1 day. Instead, if you think you learn quickly, just put more words on your sheet.

3. Immersion

Another key ingredient to mastering the language quickly and in depth is to immerse yourself in it daily. If you can’t go live or study in England, USA or any other English speaking country, then what I describe below is the second best thing you could do.

Simply do this: don’t watch Chinese TV, Chinese movies or shows, whether online or offline, limit you Chinese reading and listening (for pleasure, that is) to a minimum. Preferably limit it to nothing,at least until you gain your proficiency.

I know this sounds a bit drastic, but it is one of the best things you can do to increase your fluency and get a natural understanding of the language.

Make it a daily habit to ensure than when you switch on your TV, you have an English channel playing. In other words, live your life AS IF you were in England or USA, etc. Imagine yourself living there!

Initially, when your listening skills are basic, it may be a frustrating experience. But stick with it. Only use Chinese if you absolutely have to, like in your job, school or necessary daily interactions. Everything else: English only!

A very good starting point if you want to ditch Chinese TV is to start with English news channels. This is because the news anchors usually speak in a very clear manner, without slang and in a very approachable way. Once you can understand 70%+ of news reports, you can add documentaries to your portfolio. I would leave English movies as the last stage. This is because they are often the most difficult to understand, with plenty of slang and colloquialisms.

I can recommend two news channels in particular:

www.cnn.com/video

CNN International is top journalism! You can choose video segments by categories of most interest to you.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/video_and_audio/video/

BBC Video news would be my second choice, again top quality!

4. Use your imagination

Learn new words in a context, not simply isolated words. When you read a word on your list, imagine in which situation and sentence you would use it.

For example, if you are learning the word“satiate” (which means “satisfy a desire or an appetite to the full”), imagine in your head the feeling of being full, and literally try to feel whatever the concept the word describes.

Utilizing our imagination for learning willgive you a powerful boost and will be more productive than simply mechanically repeating words!

5.Make it relevant

If you decide to follow my advice and completely forgo reading, and listening to, Chinese (see point 3) then try to make your daily exposure to English relevant to your daily life and interests.

For example, if your hobby is history, ready about history in English. If you love philosophy, music, technology, whatever it may be, stop reading about it in Chinese, switch solely to English!
